I was born and brought up in the West of Scotland but I've been a Londoner since 1974. I live in Edmonton, so like you I see local issues first hand. I am married to Ruth who works as systems manager for a major charity.
Before entering Parliament I was the Parliamentary Officer of the Co-operative Movement working closely with a group of 19 MPs and Peers.
A member of the Labour Party since 1975, I have held numerous offices including Chairman of my local Constituency Association. Elected as a local authority Councillor in 1980 I served two terms during which I was Chair of the Finance committee and of the Housing Committee.
I was formerly a member of the North East Thames Regional Health Authority and Vice Chairman of the Governing body of the North London College. I have also served as a member of the Board of Greater London Enterprise.
Since the 2005 General Election, I have been a member of the Treasury Select Committee and am very involved in All Party Parliamentary groups on Small Businesses, Housing, Mexico.
Outside of politics I relax playing golf, reading, the cinema and occasionally watching my favourite football team.
