Edmonton Constituency

Delivering in Edmonton

Map of Edmonton

Edmonton is part of Greater London, in the district of Enfield. The postcodes covering the constituency are N9, N18, parts of EN1, N13 and N21.

The local authority of Enfield is an outer London borough on the northern edge of London, bordering the Home Countries. However Edmonton shares many of the characteristics of an inner-city area.

Edmonton has an ethnically diverse population, with a large skilled and semi-skilled population. That part of the constituency to the west of the Great Cambridge Road is characterised as professional, more likely to commute to work and with much higher levels of owner-occupied homes.

Tackling Local Issues

 Whether it be:
  • arguing the case with Ministers for the £73 million extra funding for the North Middlesex Hospital;
  • supporting Edmonton's children by backing our schools;
  • fighting to improve local train services;
  • standing up for my constituents against mobile phones masts and compulsory water meters and pushing the local Council to speed up its dumped car service –
I have been working for you both in Edmonton and in Parliament

Local Issues & Local Campaigning Since 1997

These are just some of the issues that I have tackled the past five years:

Crime

I have helped to secure CCTV in Edmonton Green and Fore Street, and I support local police initiatives with residents and in schools. Recently I chaired a Crime & The Community meeting and I want to see more police on the beat in Edmonton. Extra resources will mean more police officers locally over the coming year.

Health

The North Middlesex has benefited from recent investment and is set to see £73m more in the years ahead. I have lobbied ministers for both hospital and GP funding to improve health services for local people. I have highlighted the need to improve GP waiting times and modernise GP surgeries in Edmonton. And I recently officially opened a newly refurbished GP surgery in Bush Hill Park.

Sunbridge

Concerned relatives of Sunbridge residents came to see me several years ago because they were worried about standards of care at the home. After I got involved there were some immediate improvements and now longer-term managerial changes have been made. The home has changed from a nursing home to a residential, which will help to ensure past problems do not recur.

Mobile Phone Masts

Concern is growing about the installation and siting of these masts. I recently backed residents' opposition in Uvedale Road and the campaign was a success. The Government has now made some changes to the planning consultation process to take account of people's fears.

Dumped Cars

This is an on-going issue for me as more and more abandoned cars are left on Edmonton's streets. I have highlighted the issue on a number of occasions, spoken in parliament and pressed the council to speed up their service. The Government has recently streamlined the current system. The Prime Minister recently announced a pilot scheme running in Newham and Lewisham which will see untaxed vehicles removed after just 24 hours, and I want to see a similar scheme introduced in Enfield.

Education

I approached ministers on behalf of local schools to make the case for funding of new classrooms and has visited all schools in the constituency, celebrating their achievements and meeting the pupils. In addition I made representations to the Local Education Authority expressing my concern about the number of school places in Enfield. I also bring young people in to his office for work experience from Edmonton schools such as Salisbury. Every year I run a Christmas card competition for local primary schools.

Housing

As Co-Chair of the heavyweight All Party Homelessness and Housing Need Group I take a particular interest in housing. I played a key role on the Standing Committee debating the Homes Bill and scrutinising the detail of the legislation. I have consistently argued for more assistance for the homeless and the need to provide more affordable housing, particularly for key workers. I am a supporter of the Enfield Foyer in Edmonton, which provides temporary move-on accommodation for young homeless people.

Edmonton Green

The EPI scheme at Edmonton is a massive regeneration project and I have been involved from the start. The scheme has encountered a few problems along the way, but the replacement of run down Barbot Estate tower blocks with low-rise housing, the revamp of the shopping centre, and the prospect of a new leisure centre are vital for the regeneration of Edmonton. I backed the scheme all the way, including when necessary intervening with ministers to help to secure its future. And of course I plan to remain closely involved as the project takes shape.

Edmonton Incinerator

I have opposed the expansion of the incinerator, calling for a public inquiry and a health study in to incineration.

Water Meters

I successfully campaigned for consumer choice on water meters, and took up the issue as constituents with extensions to their homes were being forced to have water meters installed. I objected on their behalf and got Thames Water to back down, who then gave their customers a choice and agreed to remove some water meters free of charge.
