Edmonton MP Andy Love is calling for continued investment in jobs for local people to help get the unemployed back into work. Figures released today show that there are currently 9,128 people unemployed in Enfield. Thanks to extra investment that figure is 43 percent lower than the 15,999 unemployed people in the borough in 1992. But Andy is keen that the Government keeps investing to ensure that the figure becomes lower still.

Young people in particular have been disproportionately affected by the recession. Therefore Andy is fully supportive of the guarantee to provide an education or training place for young people up to 18. And a job or training place for 18-24 year olds out of work for six months. Both of these initiatives to ensure that unemployed young people are not left to struggle alone are being funded by the one-off tax on bankers’ bonuses.

And it’s not just young unemployed people who will benefit from the additional investment. Under the Future Jobs Fund, 50,000 new jobs are being created for people in areas of high unemployment; Jobcentre Plus resources are being boosted; and Local Employment Partnerships have made way for valuable work placements. The Government has spent £5 billion to help the unemployed and will continue to help people into work.

Calling for continued investment in future jobs, Andy said…

“In the 1980s and 1990s, unemployment rose for years after the recessions had ended. That’s what would happen if we cut investment and that’s why I support an increase of investment during the recovery period.

“I’m pleased that initiatives like the Future Jobs Fund will bring more jobs to Edmonton. The last thing we need to happen is for local levels of unemployment to rocket to anywhere near the figures seen in the early 1990s.”
