I am Co-Chair the All-Party Group on Homelessness and Housing Need, the largest in parliament. The Group lobbies ministers raising the interests of the homeless and those with housing problems. Of particular concern to the Group is the shortage of affordable accommodation. In the run-up to the Comprehensive Spending Review the Group pressed ministers for more funding for housing. I was pleased to see that funding for affordable housing will rise to nearly £6 billion by 2005/6.
I also chair the All Party Group on Building Societies and Financial Mutuals. The Group does all it can to support and promote mutuality, as mutuals give consumers a better deal on their savings and loans.
I take a keen interest in complex political situations. So I have been actively involved in the Cyprus issue for some years now and my maiden speech in the House of Commons on 4th June 1997 was on the subject of Cyprus.
I also Chair the newly formed Lebanon Group, and am Secretary of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Sri Lanka Group. There are significant numbers of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities living in my constituency. I also have links with the Sri Lankan Tamil and Singhalese communities and have spoken at events that each group has organised.
My key interests are housing, regeneration, social exclusion, mutuality, health, and international affairs.
All Party Building Societies Group
I was elected Chair of the Group after the 1997 General Election. Its membership has now grown to 135 MPs and Peers. The Building Societies Group does all it can to support mutuality, which provides a better deal for savers and borrowers. It also recognises the valuable role of smaller societies as local employers.
Public Accounts Committee
From 1997 to 2001 I was a member of the Public Accounts Committee, which is one of the most influential Committees of the House. It acts as Parliament's financial watchdog, scrutinising the reports produced by the Comptroller and Auditor General at the National Audit Office to ensure that public bodies and departments are providing value for money. Some key issues that have been considered recently include the Child Support Agency, and the Benefit Agency's Benefit Integrity Project.
Licensing Medicines for Children
I have been one of the few MPs in parliament to tackle this difficult issue. Many treatments used on children have never actually been licensed for that purpose. I want to see a tougher licensing system and have raised the issue with ministers and in the media. The Consumers' Association backed me in this campaign. Because of political pressure in Europe and the USA, tougher international guidelines are now being developed. However this is a long-term process and in the meantime the issue will not go away and I plan to pursue it further.
All Party Sri Lanka Group
I am the Secretary of the Group. I have a long-standing interest in Sri Lankan affairs and have links with the Sri Lankan community in my constituency and with representative organisations based in the UK. I have spoken at conferences and events organised by both the Singhalese and Tamil Communities and am a regular contributor in Parliament on Sri Lankan affairs.
The All Party Parliamentary Small Business Group (APPSBG)
The APPSBG is a cross-party group of MPs and Peers. It provides a forum for communication between smaller businesses and their representative organisations and members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. I was elected Chair of the group in 2005. As Chair, I encourage debate on the real business issues affecting smaller firms.
We tackle issues such as access to finance, the late payment of commercial debts, maternity leave and red tape. The Small Business Research Trust (SBRT) supports the consultation of the group on specific policies and issues of concern to smaller businesses.
